Zimbabwe coffee production was first introduced in the country in the 1960s, when the country was still knows as lower Rhodesia. Presently, coffee is mainly produced in the Manicaland and Mashonaland provinces on the Mozambique border. The great plateau of southern Africa runs its way through Zimbabwe giving parts of the country elevations between 4000 and 5000 feet.

Nestled in a valley about 25km to the west of Chipinge town is the picturesque New Year’s Gift Estate. The majestic mountain range surrounding New Year’s Gift somehow lends a protective feeling to the estate which is well known for a certain ‘special energy’ and a sense of peace and tranquility. New Year’s Gift Estate is an intensive conservation area and was first established in 1924. Early years concentrated mainly on Tea cultivation but 1991 saw the first Coffee plantings. Today there are 65 hectares of mature coffee. The meandering Tanganda River supplies the water for irrigation which is gravity fed via a concrete furrow system into an underground pipe network throughout the estate. To ensure adequate water supplies a 60 Mega-liter reservoir was constructed in 2013.

The Estate has its own Primary School with a small nursery school. Over 450 children are currently enrolled in the school. There is also a small library and books are made available not only to the children but employees and even the nearby cluster schools. A small clinic serves not only the labor force of 400+ and their families but is a central clinic for surrounding villages. The Nurse in Charge takes excellent care of the community but should any patient require critical care they are transported to Chipinge Hospital.

The estate processes harvested cherries with disc pulpers feeding a conventional East African pulpery, with fermentation tanks, channel grading and trellis table sun grading. There is a full Pinhalense dry mill and with Pinhalense graders on site.
