Finca Los Angeles is located in the province of Huehuetenango, one of the most
remote and spectacular of Guatemala’s twenty two provinces. Situated in the
northwest section of the country, it borders Mexico’s Tehuantepec plain as well as
the province of San Marcos, another of Guatemala’s fabled coffee growing
regions. The region itself ducks in and out of the clouds, with altitudes upwards of
6,000 ft.
Dirt roads weave their way through rugged terrain, as do the infinite waterways
which the region is blessed with. The name ‘Huehuetenango’ translates to place
of the ancients, and it is in this vein that some of Guatemala’s finest coffee is
processed – by hand and with manual depulpers.
Finca Los Angeles was first established in 1945 by Mr Angel Maria Ortega Mérida,
who later bequeathed the property to Ana María Ortega Villatoro in 1975.
On taking possession, Ms. Ana María bought and planted the other 70% of the
present property using the latest production techniques and improving the
maintenance of the existing trees. The farm includes a natural wooded area
which has been declared a permanent natural reserve.
