We are lucky to have been able to source a beautiful lot of Bourbon from the Plan del Guayabo Estate in New Oriente, Guatemala. Below are some detailed notes from our coffee buyer stationed in Guatemala:

Plan del Guayabo is Spanish for 'Guava Plains', named as such because of the abundance of guava trees in this region. Located around 1675 metres above sea level the property can receive up to 1500 milimetres of rain per year. This is in fact what makes Guatemalan coffees so unique the high altitudes, diverse microclimates, consistent rainfall patterns, and excellent cultivation and processing, hence producing a variety of distinctive types of Guatemalan arabica coffees.

The current owner of the property is Mr. Benjamin Donado. The Donado family has been in the coffee business since the year 1990, when they started to plant coffee on the property. Before this time nobody tried to plant coffee in the micro region because there was a belief that the land was only viable for forestry considering the high elevations and steepness of the terrain were a deterrent to planting. Mr. Donado thought otherwise and planted coffee, proving to be a great decision. Coffee lovers have benefited ever since because the coffee produces one of the most complex cups that we have tried from the region. The flowering period for the Bourbon variety is between the months of April and May meaning the harvest can take place between January and March. The beans are pulped, fermented in 100% natural water in tanks for up to 2 days and then 100% sun-dried giving the coffee a bright, well balanced and full body with notes of sweet honey, touches of floral and apple.
